Introduction

This research project will explore the relationship between architecture and music; how, and if music is used to design a building, and if so what would be its music related influences. For example, can an Architect form a building through rhythm? The opposite is also relevant; do musicians have a relation to architecture? My interest in this commenced with my own relationship / with music and specifically through a family member who is a Composer and musician and through my own musical experiences. Music is a big part of life and I believe it helps people to connect with a space and that a person’s emotions and therefore imagination can also be influenced by music. Additionally, after seeing the Dancing House by Frank Ghery in Prague first hand, it made me think about how music is an influential part of life and has inspired architects before and as a result I decided that I would like to look investigate this further and specifically…

“How and why, and vice versa, musicians have a relationship with architecture?”

“If the building has been inspired by music, is it also a musical building”

“If it is not how have they used it as inspiration within the building’s design?”

These are some of my questions, but I plan to identify more as my research develop.
