Alex Crossan, known to most as music producer Mura Masa, had one incredible 2016, if not fantastically hectic year. The 20-year-old originating from the quiet and respectable Channel Island of Guernsey, has electrified and captured the world, with his own take on pop and electronic music, creating dancefloor sounds to mesmerize everyone around. There is no rest for the wicked when you are soaring so high, speaking with Alex during his UK and European tour, hauled up in a Cologne nightclub bathroom for a bit of quiet, whilst he awaited live vocalist Bonzai to complete her sound check.

Still supporting his own labels artists, (Anchor Point Record’s) Alex took the time from his busy schedule to chat about his past year. Talking about his own mostly sold out tour, “It’s all been really good, sold out vibes and the kids have been really up for it. I would say people in Poland were particularly crazy, and Denmark really surprised me” says Alex. Hoping to get information on any new tracks, Alex was not letting his touring influence or change his sound. “Mostly I would say I kept the music to myself and try not to let people’s reactions influence me.”

Starting his 2016 off named as one of the prestigious BBC Sound of 2016 artist’s, the electro loving producer, has earned that spot playing well over 50 show’s this year, and dropping three singles. The latest video, LoveSick Ft. ASAP Rocky a song filled with grooving steel drums and melodic synths, hitting over 1 million views, Alex’s response being somewhat modest to this, describing it as “an overly confident Kanye West reaction” he still retains a sense of passion and gratitude to his listeners, “seeing that people care that much about it”.

Amongst the touring came the enriched festival season, of which Alex made his mark. With the likes of Glastonbury describing it as a place “every British musicians dream to play”, Fuji Rocks in Japan, and Bestival, standing out as some of the key highlights. Alex make’s it all sound too easy, but explains “I have sacrificed a lot of my personal life to do what I love”. With all this in mind fans of Mura Masa are still long anticipating his next album, which will no doubt be Everest to his year of 2017. Being the perfectionist he is, with sharp, hypnotizing Asian infused instrumental sounds the album is sure to explode.
