Kim Logan took part in the Coffee House Sessions Tour, running around London performing in venues such as BoxPark and Soho Theatre. Below is an interview with Kim about her music, upbringing, influences and much more!
You are from Florida and moved to Nashville what are the main musical differences between the two?
KIM: I spent the first 16 years of my life in Florida, and then the most recent 9 all over the place, from Boston to New York to Nashville and back again. Those three bigger cities have similar sections of genre represented in each... rock, pop, hip-hop, country, indie, etc. Florida is definitely super different... there is a lot of punk music there, and it's also where a ton of emo and a lot of its spin-offs started. But what I'm most influenced by in Florida is the soul music. It's infused with funk, reggae, island beats, blues, and even disco... there's nothing like it anywhere else in the country.
What did you study at Berklee?
K: I was at Berklee for two years, and I was dual enrolled simultaneously at Boston Conservatory for classical voice performance. I tried to dabble in as much as I could at Berklee, maybe because I somehow always knew I would only be there for a short time... I studied songwriting, contemporary voice performance, music history, musical theatre, and all the basics of music theory. Berklee is in Boston, which has been your favourite place to live in so far?
K: Out of Boston, New York, Nashville, and Florida, I honestly couldn't choose. My favorite place to be is at my family's home in New Hampshire. Has your operatic training influenced your musical style now?
K: My opera work absolutely influences my original music! I've been singing opera professionally with regional companies since I was 9, and I would never give it up. I need the balance it provides in contrast with touring and writing and rock and roll. You have collaborated with a range of different industries, which has been the most interesting?
K: A recent challenge for me, a fascinating experience, was acting in three clips over in France while I was on tour... one short film and two music videos. The full immersion into a set and a crew, all living and working together for a week, was unlike anything I'd ever done before. I look forward to more acting and film industry experiments. Have you got a favourite performance?
K: I think my favorite performance so far was opening for Willie Nelson in a gorgeous theatre in the town where I was born... Clearwater, FL. Not much is gonna top that night.
How did you discover the Coffee House Sessions?
K: My incredible friend and fellow artist Melany Watson visited the UK several months ago and suggested I get in contact.
Have you toured anywhere else?
K: Thus far, I have played either solo or with a band in 33 states, England, and France.
Your Album is self-titled, is there a reason for this?
K: My debut album was self-titled because it was sort of my introduction to the world as Kim Logan. It's not my real name, because most people can't pronounce the legal one, so it was also the beginning of my artistic output under this new umbrella.
Do you have any plans for a second album?
K: My new project, Pseudoscience, has begun its release! It is a singles series, of 7" records released digitally as well, each with a different producer and theme. "Chapter 1" is with producer Vance Powell (Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Chris Stapleton) and will be released 9/9 on all download and streaming platforms! Check out the video for "Cadillac" at: http://www.flavourmag.co.uk/premiere-kim-logan-debuts-video-vance-powell-produced-single-cadillac/ and pre-order the vinyl at www.kimlogan.net !
If you could perform anywhere where would it be?
K: I think my dream venue is an old opera house. I actually want to do a tour of old opera houses all over the country, but with a full bill with other contemporary artists.
Do you have any other music plans coming up?
K: I have a bunch of tour dates coming up this fall, all will be posted at www.kimlogan.net/shows !
